I create whimsical mixed-media paintings and ceramic sculptures that depict the characteristics and variations of body types that epitomize black women. Throughout my college career, I've absorbed a horde of informa- tion, half of it being racially centered. My personal experiences with racial disenfranchisement and discrimination have fueled my desire to depict the beauty of black women’s features which have been historically marginalized or denigrated.
My goal is to illustrate black bodies as vessels of beauty because historically, we have been ridiculed because of our features, while non- black individuals have been praised for commodifying said features.
I do this by depicting certain characteristics (whether that be a torso, lips or others) with mushrooms. I included mushrooms in variations of color because it not only helps with
illustrating black bodies as vessels but it also aides in adding a sense of whimsicality. Thus, showing the ethereal beauty of characteristics throughout the black diaspora.
